Kids Sing 2025

The Dunedin Children's Choir can't wait to sing as part of the 2nd Dunedin 'Kids Sing' organised by NZCF! Held in Dunedin Town Hall on the 7th of May with multiple primary/intermediate schools, this is sure to be a highlight of the year!

2025 Summer Sing

We had a really successful first DCC holiday programme! 'Summer Sing' was held at Wakari School from the 16th to 18th of January, 2025. We had a junior and senior stream, where students had warm-up sessions, song-learning sessions as well as musicianship. Students were either treated to a morning or afternoon tea! The final day concluded with a free concert for families and a shared lunch,

Our Gift For You, December 2024

The Dunedin Children's Choir performed at the stunning St Patrick's Basilica in South Dunedin. The choir was joined by special guests who present their own items. Ozan Biner-McGrath performed Scherzo Op. 4 by Brahms, and Erin Connelly-Whyte, Claire Barton and DCC team member Natasha Manowitz performed 'Santa Claus is Comin' to Town' and 'O Holy Night'. This large event was led by renowned Mc Melanie Kerr, who weaved the various items together with warmth, grace and humour. All donations at the door went to children and families in need this Christmas, distributed by Presbyterian Support Otago and St Vincent de Paul. The choir received a very positive review in the Otago Daily Times.

Tūhura Otago Museum Performance, October 2024

The Dunedin Children's Choir performed at Tūhura Otago Museum on Sunday the 20th of October at 2pm. The choir sang on Atrium Level 2 and enjoyed the beautiful piano and acoustics of this space. The choir enjoyed performing to a large crowd of whānau and other supporters, singing 3 rounds and the crowd favourute, 'Route 66' by Troup, Arr. Emerson. The Chamber Choir and World Choir Games Choir sang two items each, and Caleb Wayne treated the crowds to a piano solo. A huge thank you to Caleb for being our guest artist.

World Choir Games: Awards Ceremony, July 2024

The Chamber Choir were awarded a Silver Diploma, Level Six for their performance! This was judged by an internatinal panel of five judges (from NZ, Australia, China, Korea and Italy) using the MUSICA MUNDI eveluation point system. 

This impressive event was held in Spark Arena, with choir leaders Tash and Susie welcomed in alongside choir representatives with all across the world and awarded their diploma on the Spark Arena stage in front of thousands of people.

While waiting for the bus back to the hotel afterwards, the Chamber Choir did an impromptu flash mob, singing a range of sings including 'Fruit Canon' with the parents!

World Choir Games: Friendship Concert, July 2024

The Dunedin Children's Choir - Chamber Choir performed in a Friendship Concert in the foyer of the Civic Theatre in Auckland CBD alongside three other children's choirs from around the world! The other choirs came from Korea, China and Zimbabwe. 

The Chamber Choir performed their four songs to a packed audience. Friendship concerts as part of the World Choir Games are free concerts, celebrating the uniting power of song. It was very special for the children to meet other children from around the world, to exchange gifts and get photos.

World Choir Games: Open Competition, July 2024

The Chamber Choir performed their programme of four songs in the Auckland Town Hall as part of the Open Competition (Category 01) at the World Choir Games 2024!

Leaving Concert, July 2024

The Chamber Choir had a very special leaving concert at their home base, Flagstaff Community Church. We welcome special guests: 

Deputy Mayor Cherry Lucas

Composer Sue Mepham

The children sang their World Choir Games programme, Deputy Mayor Cherry Lucas gave a speech and the children were awarded with certificates to recognise their hard work leading up to the world's largest choral event! Sue Mepham also talked to the audience about the meaning behind her beautiful song.

This concert was followed by coffee/tea and 'bring a plate' where everyone had a chance to share in the joy and celebrate the children's success.

Celebration Recital in Dunedin Town Hall, July 2024

The Chamber Choir rehearsed and performed in the majestic Dunedin Town Hall, to family and friends. Thank you to Dunedin Venues for their generosity through the Community Access Grant that made this memorable experience for the children possible! This was the first time the children performed their full World Choir Games programme and wore their new performance outfits. 

How fantastic it was for the children to hear their voices ringing through the Town Hall!

Fundraising Concert with Distinctive Soundz, May 2024

The Chamber Choir were invited to be guest artists to sing alongside Distinctive Soundz, a Dunedin women's community choir. The Chamber Choir performed three out of the four songs that they were preparing for the World Choir Games 2024. Papatūānuku is Breathing by Sue Mepham, Dear Examiner by Anthony Ritchie and Why We Sing by Greg Gilpin. 

The newly formed 'Rigs and Heels' band containing DCC team members Tash, Helen and Susie also performed jigs and reels to the appreciative crowd. This was the first time the children sang their World Choir Games songs in public. A huge thank you to Distinctive Soundz who chose us as their charity to fundraise for. We were blown away, receiving very generous funds from both ticket sales and the raffle.

End of Year Extravaganza, December 2023

The DCC loved performing for a full audience at their End of Year Extravaganza! The choir performed a range of Christmas carols, where the audience were invited to join in, as well as favourites from movies. 

Singing students from SMMC (Bathgate Centre) were the guest artists, and we were treated to a range of soloists from the choir. Following the concert, all students were presented with a certificate to acknoledge their hard work this year.

Dunedin Airport Performance, December 2023

The DCC enjoyed bringing Christmas cheer to Dunedin Airport! The choir performed 'A Million Dreams' from The Greatest Showman, as well as many popular Christmas carols. We thank Dunedin Airport for their support.

Otago Sing Fest, Sept 2023

The Dunedin Children's Choir enjoyed performing as part of Otago's Sing Fest, at the end of Term 3. This was organized by the NZ Choral Federation. The choir sang Edelweiss by Rodgers and Hammerstein, arr by Linda Spevacek, and Kusimama by Jim Papoulis. Andrew Harray (djembe) and Helen Rutherford (shakers) joined us for Kusimama.

The Chamber Choir also sang Feed the Birds by Sherman and Sherman, arr by Cristi Cary Miller. We enjoyed hearing the other choirs: Flagstaff Community Choir, Ōpoho Singing Group, Knox Church Children's Choir, Dunedin Star Singers, Logan Park High School Choir and East Taieri School Choir. The concert concluded with two massed items that we took part in: Ka Waiata by R. Puanaki and Riversong by Andy Beck.

Songs from Home, August 2023

The Dunedin Children's Choir performed in a joint concert with Olivia Pike, Flagstaff Community Choir, Balmacewen Intermeidate Choir and Tricolore (chamber music group from Logan Park High School). Named Songs from Home, this concert was a farewell concert for Olivia Pike before she moved to Boston to continue her studies in voice. 

The Dunedin Children's Choir performed The Wreck by Jan Holdstock and Dum Dadah (Anon). The older children sang Let's Sing All Together by Susie Davies-Splitter and Phil Davies. A highlight was ending the concert with a combined item written especially for the occasion by Sue Mepham, called I Hear The Call. It was a great experience for the children to hear Olivia sing, and to sing amongst so many others!

Midwinter Carnival, June 2023

The Dunedin Children's Choir performed on the first night of the annual Dunedin Midwinter Carnival, in the First Church grounds. The choir performed in Burns Hall, to a packed audience and as part of a varied evening of entertainment.

The choir performed three songs for their set: Echo by Sally K. Albrecht, Viva La Musica by Praetorius and Fruit Canon. The MC for this event was the fabulous Tahu Mackenzie.

DCC & St. Andrew's College, May 2023

We had the most amazing time performing in a joint concert with St. Andrew's College senior choirs. We were treated to a 45 minute varied programme of choral music, babershop and solos from St. Andrew's, who visited us the moment they arrived in Dunedin as part of their tour to Dunedin. We performed thr

ee items: Echo by Sally K. Albrecht, Viva La Musica by Praetorius and Fruit Canon. A highlight was teaching St. Andrew's and the entire audience our crowd favourite - Fruit Canon. Some groovy dance moves were on display. Thank you St. Andrew's for visiting us and inspiring our students.

End of Term Performance, April 2023

The children enjoyed sharing what they had learnt with families in this casual concert. We demonstrated the musicianship skills we had learnt (reading crotchets and quavers/tas and titis), our warmups (such as Lean Forwards, Lean Backwards) and our songs. During Term 1 we focused on learning rounds in 2-3 parts to develop independence and part-singing.
